Summer Updates

Hey all,

I got back from university just over a month ago now, and things are going great! I passed all my exams, it's the summer holiday, and best of all, ArcadeXL.com is coming along really well.

You may or may not have noticed the subtle changes around here, so I'll give you the low down on the most significant ones anyway.

· Sharing - it is now much easier to share games with your friends and help promote the site by using the new 'share' box to the right when you're playing a game. Please support the site this way whenever you can.

· E-mail verification - you can now verify a different e-mail other than the one already assigned to your account. This will be handy for when full restrictions are imposed sometime later this year.

· Forums search - searching of replies is now fully enabled, along with keyword highlighting which lets you find old posts and discussions in the forums at a much higher depth.

· Advertisements - in order to keep the site running I'm having to try out a few new advertisement providers, as you may have noticed within games and within the text on the page. All of your feedback is appreciated.

But here's what I'm guessing a lot of members have been waiting to hear for years.

· Clans ALPHA - yes, clans is now in its alpha stage. What this means is that the bulk of it has been completed, however it is under thorough testing by our admins. I for one am quite excited and hope to have it at least in BETA in the next few weeks - that means a lucky few will get a sneak preview! Make sure you're verified and signed up to the newsletter to find out first thing.

I hope you all have a great summer and stick around for the improvements we have in store.

Over and out!

Email verification is still messed up, as it doesnt work with hotmail accounts (mine anyway).

Clans may be cool, but ive seen it in place and worked with it before. There may be problems with members getting mad and irritated about their placement, and/or conflifts withen in each clan.

It's not 'messed up', it's just that hotmail and gmail don't like e-mails from @arcadexl.com addresses just yet, which is the reason why I'm not imposing any restrictions til I've worked it out.

What do you mean irritated about their placement?

sounds like that xl is going to be better than before

I still consider it messed up, because it doesnt work properly.

I meant that whichever clan a member may be placed in, might not be the one that they prefer or want. So they may complain about it, thus causing problems.

Fair enough.

You should probably just wait and see before making any judgements about clans, because they could be quite different to what you expect. For instance, it is built-in that a member and clan admin must mutually choose that the player becomes a clan member.

True, this may be different, but on every site and every system, there are members who are not pleased even when they make the choice. That leads to complaints, and is just a usual part of life while running a site.

So what you're saying is, whatever happens, in all possibilities, there will be complaints? What's new?

All in all, clan users are going to have free choice in what they do, so really, there shouldn't be any major problems of the type you're talking about.

Basically yes. Always are problems with everything, and i was just hoping to have some Admins read it and be ready for it.

As i stated, even when a member makes their choice, they may want to go back on said decision afterwards. Even though it was their own fault, they will expect you to fix it and even take the blame for it.

Members can leave or be ousted from a clan when they choose. It's built-in.

Why find the negatives first? This is an amazing feature. It gives XL an added RPG feel on top of what is an already amazing arcade site. If people are going to complain then let them opt out of joining a clan. It will be as Crabby stated "their choice."

I'm just happy to see the improvements. This site as grown incredibly since I joined, and I looke forward to more updates.

I've yet to this day to find a better (FREE) arcade than xl. So let's be greatful.

Just trying to make sure you and the other Admins know that there prolly will problems man.

Joshecp-- I have used something similar before, so i know how they work in general.
Yes i only mentioned the negatives, but it was as a warning to the admins. True, also clans would add another part to XL, to make it stand out more and actually it may end up being fun also. But with each new feature comes added problems.

Me, and the other Admins, over the years, have come to recognise MANY problems that could occur with all additions to the site.

The clans idea is going to be absolutley unique in almost every way to any other system out there. It's been built from the ground up to avoid all issues you have stated.

But coming back to what you said, you could say the same about every other thing in the world, for example:

Console gaming, being out of order that MMORPG's, up until late, have been coming out in Europe later then the US, and Asia, giving them a head start.

Ok, ill just quit arguing it now, because you dont seem to want to recognize the fact that i was just trying to point out something that is true of all features, new and old.

And about those games, you can download them/play them by using a server based in either Asia or the US. Its just how you go about it, as i can download music and movies that haven't been released in the US, by using p2p and other sites that allow users from all over the world to access them.

Na, mate, not an argument, it's a debate .. a friendly one I like to think =]

Well, yea, but when it comes to like any MMORPG, i find it not being fair the fact, im not rich so i can play 100 hours get loadsa stuff, then you get someone who just happens to be rich, buys everything without earning it.

See what im getting at dude?
posted by josephman1988 at 2008.07.07 @ 18:18PM

I really doubt you have played anything too similar.
posted by Crabby at 2008.07.07 @ 21:38PM

Yeah i see your point with that Joe, but also their stats wont be very high, as they didnt have to earn any of the equipment, like you do. So you can kill them easier, because you actually know what you are doing with each game. (Not sure if my logic is correct, cause i dont play any MMORPG games)

Crabby--
I have been around the internet for a long time, since i was 6, and playing on different sites for just about as long. Someone has definitely had the same concept, and maybe even very similar settings and programming for it. So i prolly have played something similar before in these 13 years.
It is very hard to come up with an original concept that hasnt been tried out before.
posted by Metal Lives at 2008.07.07 @ 22:38PM

Sorry. I didn't realise being on the internet since you were 6 enables you to form opinions about website features before you've even seen them.
posted by Crabby at 2008.07.08 @ 5:49AM

Wow, sarcastic comments from an admin....

Im not saying i have seen every little part of the internet. But what i am saying is that the chances of you coming up with and entirely new concept/ feature is highly unlikely.
So im damn sure that i have seen something somewhat similar in these 13 years.

In other news, it seems like Hotmail and GMail reduced their strictness on e-mails from ArcadeXL.com last night.

Let me know if it works for you.

Actually, yes it did. Thanks man.
